How to keep your pet warm on those winter walks

As you’re probably aware we’ve got a few wintery weeks ahead of us, the frosty mornings are back. The temperature is set to drop into the minuses and the last thing we want is our pups getting a chill on their daily walks.

That’s why we have put together our most recommended coats and jumpers to keep your pets nice and cosy. With our January sale still going on until the end of the month it’s the perfect time to update your pets wardrobe and give them that extra layer on their walks.

Does my dog need a coat?

Although all dogs could do with some extra warmth in this weather there are some breeds that have a lower tolerance to the cold due to their fur type, short haired breeds, smaller dogs or slender dogs don’t have layers of fat or fur to keep them warm on their own. However, when it comes to longer-haired breeds and ones with thicker coats, they don’t necessarily need a coat for warmth but they can benefit from a waterproof jacket to keep them dry.

Examples of breeds that have a low tolerance to cold weather:

  • Great Dane
  • Beagle
  • Poodle
  • Pug
  • Chihuahua
  • French Bulldog
  • Greyhound
  • Shih Tzu
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Boxer
Paws And Tails - How To Keep Your Pet Warm On Those Winter Walks

These are just some examples, make sure you do some research into your dog’s specific breed so you can meet their needs as the temperature drops.

Another aspect that affects how well your dog can tolerate the cold is its age. Puppies are not yet able to regulate body temperature as well as adult dogs do. Therefore you should make sure they’re wrapped up when taking them outside. Even a little jumper will help, we have some recommended products below that may help. However, you also need to think about your older dogs, they can also struggle to regulate body temperature, especially if they are less active than they used to be.

As well as the temperature dropping we are due to have some extra rainy days, this is another benefit of getting a coat for your pet, you don’t have to deal with the struggle of drying them off when they get home and then having your house smell of wet dog. Which no one wants. Hair on dogs absorbs water like a sponge which can then make them cold and damp which isn’t very nice for your pup.

We stock many different types of clothing for dogs but we’ve narrowed down our most recommended for those colder days. From knitted jumpers to waterproof coats. We even have towel bathrobes that will help dry your dog off after a long walk in the rain. These are amazing for those dogs that don’t like being towel dried, which can cause a lot of distress for some dogs, you simply put the towel bathrobe on the dog and it will dry your dog so much faster, it will also stop your house from getting soaked when they decide to have their mad 10 minutes trying to dry off themselves. (We’ve all been there)
